Malloy Hyundai Service Advice: Oil Change Facts

Regular oil and filter changes are the most important routine service you can perform on your vehicle. Ensuring that your car is running with reasonably clean oil at all times will maximize fuel efficiency and prolong your engine life.

Oil change intervals vary depending on the year, make and model of each car, as well as the type of oil used and the driving environment.

As a rule of thumb, under normal driving conditions, pre-2010 vehicles should have an oil change every 3,500 to 5,000 miles; and newer post-2010 vehicles, if using a synthetic blend of oil, can usually run for 7,500 miles in between oil changes.

Your vehicle Owner's Manual will state the required oil change interval for your car or you can call our service center and we will be happy to tell you.

The Importance
Of Regular oil & Filter Changes

Internal combustion engines are made up of many moving parts, most notably the pistons which move up and down within the valves as they open and close. The clearances between these metallic parts are minute.

A motor oil's primary function is to lubricate these moving parts, prevent metal-on-metal contact, and carry away some of the heat generated by the constant friction. Your motor oil actually accounts for about 1/3rd of your engine's cooling system.

Motor oil performs several secondary functions as well. It contains:

  • Anti-foaming agents to prevent the oil from becoming frothy, which would make it hard for the oil pump to circulate and pass it through the oil filter;
  • Anti-corrosion agents to protect the engine from rust and erosion;
  • Dispersants to diffuse soot, sludge, carbon and oxidation products within the oil, in order to reduce deposit formation within the engine's components;
  • Detergents to help remove foreign deposits coating internal engine parts.

Over time, your motor oil undergoes thermal breakdown, and will gradually lose some of its lubrication and heat absorption properties, while the additives within it get used up and cease being effective.

Further, fuel that is injected into the engine's cylinders does not achieve 100% combustion, and excess fuel can slide past the piston rings and become co-mingled with your engine oil, which lowers the flash point of the oil.

As you clock up the miles, your motor oil and filter both progressively become contaminated with combustion residues and other impurities including soot, sludge, and water. This causes the oil to progressively become more viscous, increasing the friction and heat on engine components, and allowing burnt residues to more readily deposit and coat internal engine parts. Further, the impurities held in suspension within the oil can have a corrosive effect on engine components. The result is accelerated engine wear and reduced fuel economy.

If the car is driven for an extended period beyond the scheduled oil change interval without an oil and filter change being performed, serious engine damage can ensue. While this is a worst case scenario resulting from extended neglect, driving your vehicle without replacing the oil and filter according to the manufacturer's recommended interval will nonetheless reduce fuel efficiency as well as your vehicle's engine life.

Service technicians can readily determine how frequently a vehicle's oil has been changed based upon the amount of sludge that has built up, as well as the degree of brown coating that has formed on internal engine parts. As a motor vehicle owner, your responsibility is to ensure that your engine oil is replaced before it degrades to the point that it starts causing accelerated engine wear.

The Importance of Only Using Hyundai Approved Oils

Modern Hyundai engine designs are engineered to precise tolerances in order to meet target specifications for performance, reliability, and longevity. Your Owner's Manual specifies the weight and type of oil required for each model. Failure to use the correct filter and oil type can lead to serious engine damage.
